Astronomic club from Plevník-Drienové together with Astronomic cabinet near Považské enlightenment centre have been preparing expeditions of amateur astronomers for decades. After replacing the electrical lighting in Dubnica nad Váhom, the sky above the village Lednické Rovne was not sufficiently clear and astronomers were looking for a more suitable location for observing the Perseids –as the most suitable location they chose to be the area near the monument above the Vrchteplá village.

Perseids are fragments of comets and they got the name because they seem to be flying out of the constellation of Perseus. In summer, the planet Earth crosses the densest part of these fragments and under the influence of Earth’s gravity, they get to the atmosphere. Their size is similar to a grain of sand or a nail and that is the reason why they burn away before reaching Earth’s surface and these lighting effects are perceived as a falling meteor. Perseids activity starts in mid-July and ends one month later. On a clear day, we can see 50 meteors per hour.
